Large folio of (2) pages, 1 portrait, xcii pp., 194 pp., (3) pages of list of subscribers, 6 plates out of text, bound in full blue morocco, ribbed spine and boards entirely covered with an important decoration formed by friezes and gilt irons with mosaic pieces of green and brown morocco, double gilt fillet on the edges, large inner lace, blue silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges, slipcase lined (René Kieffer). First printing. Portrait by Lafitte, engraved by Ribault and 6 hors-texte compositions by Gérard, Girodet, Isabey, Lafitte, Moreau and Proudhon. The illustration of this book is of great quality. The figure of the "Naufrage de Virginie" by Proudhon is particularly remarkable. It is here in double condition. One of the very few copies reprinted in folio format and which contains the figures before the letter. There are only 7 copies of this state in the list of subscribers. A unique copy enriched with: -an original ink drawing, unsigned, with the mention "unpublished drawing"; -an important set of 40 old engravings interleaved in the work, some in colour or on double page, drawn by: Moreau, Landon, Charpentier, Scott, Guinet, Leloir, Lambert, Vernet, Delorme, Bétrémieux, etc.; Superb and exceptional copy of the most beautiful early edition of "Paul et Virginie" in an important and spectacular binding and with numerous enrichments. One of the most beautiful copies of this book known.
