CAZOTTE: Oeuvres badines et morales. S.n.... - Lot 28 - Vermot et Associés
CAZOTTE: Oeuvres badines et morales. S.n. [Cazin], London 1788, In-18 (8,5x13,5cm), 234pp. and 231pp. and 218pp. and 282pp. and XI, 192pp. and 233pp. (2), 7 volumes bound in lightly raked calf, smooth spine decorated, yellow edges. (slight foxing). New edition and first one by Cazin. The first collective edition will appear in 2 volumes in-8 in 1776, then a third volume will be added to the first two in 1788. 7 frontispieces by Dunker. Very nice set. Volumes 1 and 2: Ollivier. Volume 3: The impromptu Lord. Volume 4: The Devil in love. Volume 5: Fables. Volume 6 : Fables and tales. Volume 7: Tales. Although today we remember Cazotte exclusively for Le Diable amoureux, magical episodes are quite numerous in his work, especially in his oriental or fairy tales, which are similar to those of Hamilton, but also in the poem Ollivier. It is true, however, that Le Diable amoureux is of a very different character, it is no longer just a charming work, but a disturbing one, and many have seen in it and still see in it the proof of the author's illuminism, a system which will be fully revealed by Swedenborg and others. Cazotte remains, above all, one of the pioneers of French fantasy literature, along with Potocki and Le Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse, another diablerie, but one that remained unknown until 1960.
