In-12 old orange glazed calf, spine decorated with two gilt fillets on the boards, int. lace, gilt edges (foxing, small brown stain at the top of about 50 ff.). 24 ff + 588 + 144, Frontispiece (angel sounding trumpet) and 19 (of 23) engravings including the 7 deadly sins, by Humbelot. First edition. Very nice book printed with the curvilinear "writing type" invented in 1643 by Pierre Moreau, ordinary printer of the King. Calligrapher, and after having produced several calligraphy manuals, Pierre Moreau will come to typography only towards the end of his life and will decide to imitate the French cursive scripts of his time. His typefaces are among the most innovative and beautiful of the time. Moreau also created ornaments that can be found in this edition, floating arabesques, fleurons... Moreau obtained a privilege from the king to be the only one to use his typefaces, which were forgotten after his death. A charming copy in a pleasant 19th century binding, unsigned.
