CHARRIERE (Madame de) : Letters written from... - Lot 38 - Vermot et Associés
CHARRIERE (Madame de) : Letters written from Lausanne, first part. In-12 half green vellum of the time. This copy is a bibliographical curiosity. It is the very rare edition of Prault 1788 (in 118 pages and 2 pages of errata) reported for the first time in the romantic catalogue Escoffier (n°20) but bearing the curious feature of having been put back on sale in 1807 by Lhuillier who simply substituted a relay title. Belle van Zuylen known as Isabelle de Charrière (1740 near Utrecht-1805 Colombier near Neuchâtel). Wife of Charles-Emmanuel de Charrière, who gave her the freedom she wished within the marriage, she had intellectual contacts throughout Europe with, among others, Mozart, Rameau, Rousseau, Benjamin Constant, with whom she was a friend and with whom she maintained a correspondence until her death. Her most famous publications, the "Lettres neuchâteloises" (1784) and the "Lettres écrites de Lausanne", date from her regular stays in Lausanne and Neuchâtel. These epistolary novels describe life in French-speaking Switzerland at the time in a clear and lively style. In "Lettres écrites de Lausanne", a widow tells of the pleasures and difficulties of bringing up her daughter alone and finding a suitable match for her, allowing her the freedom she so cherishes. The daughter recognizes the difficulty and the book ends with a rejection of both marriage and society. Belonging to the French feminine literary tradition of Marie de Sévigné, Germaine de Staël and George Sand, Charrière has been noted for the originality and courage of her work, particularly with regard to the traditional role of women in eighteenth-century society. Recognized by some critics as one of the century's most subtle and accomplished novelists, Charriere is appreciated for her innovation in theme and form, and she is also an early advocate of gender equality."
