[GALLERY] The Means of Curing Love. Gallant... - Lot 44 - Vermot et Associés
[GALLERY] The Means of Curing Love. Gallant conversations. Paris, Quinet, 1681. In-12 contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated (hinges cracked, freckles). Original edition. Unclassifiable anonymous work, which is both a translation and a polemical commentary of the Remedia. A novel consisting of six "gallant conversations" (as the subtitle indicates), the fiction is only a pretext for a discussion of Ovid's precepts of love. A small select community of marquesses and countesses meet in the country to read the gallant books of the season, and discover the Préceptes galants, which is a translation of Ovid's L'Art d'aimer published by Louis Ferrier de la Martinière in 1678. The novelistic plot thus gains a foothold in editorial reality, when the company decides to complete the work of the author of the Préceptes galants: "Since, according to what Madame la Comtesse says, there is no appearance that he wants to take this trouble, I would suggest that we take it up ourselves, and that each of us choose a few precepts which he would then communicate to the whole company. The six "conversations" that follow are nothing more than a fragmented but complete translation of the Remedia into verse. Each fragment is submitted to the assembly, which sometimes approves and sometimes disapproves of Ovid, giving rise to argumentative discussions on various points of the doctrine of love.
