CAMPAN (J.-L.-H. Genest Mme): Letters from... - Lot 47 - Vermot et Associés
CAMPAN (J.-L.-H. Genest Mme): Letters from two young friends. Paris, Imprimerie de Plassan, 1811. In-8 brown half-chagrin of the XIXth century, spine decorated, 2 ff and 167 pages. First edition, rare, not put in the market and which contains passages deleted in the reprint. After the Revolution, Madame Campan founded the Institution nationale de Saint-Germain where Joséphine de Beauharnais was raised. In 1807, Napoleon appointed her director of the Imperial House of Écouen, a house of education for young girls inspired by the program of Madame de Maintenon at Saint-Cyr. In 1811, she published these "Letters from two friends", which describe life at Écouen. Under the Restoration her post was abolished, and at first this work, which contained strong praise for the emperor, was censored. After a period of purgatory, it is published again from 1824. A rare copy enriched with a beautiful letter from the author to a young lady.
