NASA. View of the lunar ground by the space probe LUNAR ORBITER IV (Frame #187) during its 33rd lunar orbit during its photographic mission around the Moon on June 2, 1967. Thanks to a complex mechanism of photographing, developing and scanning in lunar orbit, the data can then be tele-transmitted to Earth from the Moon and developed by the NASA laboratory. This image was taken at a height of 1690 miles above the lunar surface. The selenographic coordinates of the site are approximately 89° West longitude and 15° South latitude. The dark basin in the lower left corner of the photograph is "MARE ORIENTALE" which has a diameter of approximately 186 miles. The irregular dark zone stretching in length is "MARE VERIS" (The Spring Sea"), it flows at the feet of "ROOK MOUNTAINS". This large basin is interpreted to have been created by the impact of a large meteorite and is only filled by more recent volcanic eruptions. Period silver print. NASA logo and caption typewritten on the back. 25.5 x 20.5CM with margins.
