CRIMINAL - Paul LEBIEZ (Angers 1853 - Guillotined... - Lot 149 - Vermot et Associés
CRIMINAL - Paul LEBIEZ (Angers 1853 - Guillotined on September 7, 1878), murderer with his friend Aimé Barré of the Widow Gillet (Two young college friends, educated, intelligent, but... with long teeth! The Widow Gillet, an old milkmaid, had the misfortune to confide to Barré, a business agent on rue d'Hauteville, that she had 14,000 francs worth of securities. On April 6, 1878, the two accomplices set up a lookout to lure the poor woman into Barré's office; Barré struck her twice with a hammer and Lebiez finished her off with a scraper to the heart; Lebiez, a medical student, did not immediately cut up the corpse, knowing that two hours after her last breath the blood would flow less; They will spend this time at the café; Then, while Barré fetches the milkmaid's valuables, Lebiez detaches the head, arms, and legs to cram them into a trunk; Lebiez is furious that the head is damaged by the hammer's breaks, "otherwise I would have sold it for 25 fr"; Cynically, Lebiez, a few days later, gives a lecture at the Arras Hall on "Darwinism and the Church," declaring: "Every being tends to take its place in the sun. But at the banquet of nature, there is no room for all the guests, there is no place set for everyone. During his trial, Lebiez claimed to be a Darwinist in order to justify his act, which horrified the public but which nevertheless made the case terribly publicized: The file presented comes from a collection of autographs specializing in assassins and criminals (The cover of the folder that gathered the documents is attached), it includes: Autograph letter signed by LEBIEZ, 2 p small in-8, Paris (38 rue de l'Ecole de Médecine), August 24, 1875, to a bookseller ("I beg you to send me as soon as possible the catalogue of the works of your bookshop that you sell by subscription (5% per month). I hope to find there some works which would be necessary for me") / Booklet made by the collector which gathers a press article with a portrait of the audience and another later one, from the Figaro of October 30, 1889, by Gustave Geoffroy, at the Première at the Gymnase of a play by Alphonse Daudet, "La Lutte pour la Vie", inspired by the relations between these two young criminals (very interesting analysis) as well as extracts from the work of G. Macé, former head of the Sûreté department, "Mon Musée criminel" (detached pages with illustrations) relating this crime
