Seamaster Civilian" range, different from diving watches The term Seamaster appeared in the history of Omega in 1948 with the launch of this range within the collections of the manufacture of Bienne, at the same time as the collections Speedmaster and Railmaster collections. "This collection is characterized by waterproof watches. However, be careful not to confuse "waterproof" watches with "diving" watches. Waterproofing was the innovation that brands could offer their customers after the Second World War, due to the development and progress linked to military orders during this conflict. Omega had delivered nearly 26,000 watches to the RAF, after having demanded perfectly waterproof, accurate, reliable and easily repairable watches. It is therefore amusing to note that watches linked to British aviation would become the symbol of the waterproof watch, indirectly linked to the nautical world and associated sports. Another technical advance in line with waterproofing and sports watches is the use of luminescent substances. Although radioactive and dangerous like radium, they allow the wearers of these watches to read the time in the dark. With more assertive designs, the increase in the size of the calibers and the demands of consumers, the Seamaster range will grow, offering a wide range of watches from the simple three hands to chronographs. Known around the world for equipping certain armed forces and secret agents in the movies, this vast range of waterproof watches is still highly valued by collectors around the globe and is often the gateway to the world of watchmaking for many enthusiasts. If the models have evolved over time, the font has also undergone some changes. It is the "S" of Seamaster that has seen its design transformed, never to change for nearly 30 years. Here are some examples of signatures present on the watches offered at this sale. Note that the vast majority of Omega's production of the Seamaster range (especially the waterproof watches, not the diving watches) was marketed with dials in silver/cream tones, whose patinas make them unique. The Seamaster diving watches will be presented later in the sale, in a dedicated section. The difference between a "waterproof watch" and a "dive watch". A waterproof watch is not necessarily a dive watch, but a dive watch is necessarily waterproof. In addition to perfect water resistance, a dive watch must meet (at least) the ISO 6425 standard: resist a depth of 100 meters, a secure measurement system to indicate the dive time (a rotating bezel for example) and visibility in the dark of this measurement. Expert's note: the watches of this sale having been opened for expertise, they are no longer waterproof. A usual revision with water-resistance control
