Dala'il al-Khayrat, circa 1850 Maghrebian manuscript, decorated on paper. 120 x 120 mm. 355 leaves, on a single column, 7 or 8 lines in sepia Arabic per page, key words and phrases in red or blue, 5 polychrome titles with decorative rosettes extending into the margins, two illustrated leaves depicting the tombs of the Prophet Muhammad and his caliphs in Mecca, numerous double ruled leaves in red. Some leaves slightly blackened by ink oxidation, a few small stains, modern brown morocco binding with flap, cold-stamped and decorated, slightly rubbed. The Dala'il Al Khayrat (also known as Dalailul Khairat, تاريخلا لئالد ) is a compilation of salawat, i.e. prayers on the Prophet. The book's extended title is Dala'il Al Khayrat wa Shawariq Al-Anwar fi Dhikr al-Salat 'ala al-Nabi al-Mukhtar (He who guides to good and the emergence of blazing lights, because he incites to pray over the chosen Prophet). Written in the 15th century by iman Mohammed al-Jazouli, the Dala'il al Khayrat spread throughout the Islamic world, from North Africa to Indonesia. Every pious family owned one, princes exchanged sumptuous copies and people generally cherished the book.
