Ferdousi/Firdousi, Shahnameh 39 illustrated leaves from a Pe - Lot 60
Ferdousi/Firdousi, Shahnameh 39 illustrated leaves from a Persian manuscript on paper, each leaf comprising 25 or 27 lines written in nasta'liq script in black ink, arranged in four columns, with gold and red inter-column fillets, gold, red and blue threaded inner margins, titles in red nasta'liq script between blue fillets, illustrations in gouache and gold, three leaves with polychrome and gold illuminations. These illuminated leaves come from a manuscript of the Book of Kings, which included the Barzu-nameh and Garshasp-nameh interpolations common in Indian copies. Unlike many other copies, where the image accompanies the event described in the text, here almost all the paintings are either out of context or inserted in the middle of the passage concerned. There are also a few erroneous titles, added at a later date. Finally, a few folios, produced by a different hand and at a different time, can be seen at top right and top left. Sheet size: 37.2 x 22.5 cm. North India, Kashmir, mid-19th century. Provenance: Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, London, sale November 12, 2024, lot 14.
