Philippe de NOAILLES, Duke of MOUCHY, Marshal of France in 1 - Lot 283
Philippe de NOAILLES, Duke of MOUCHY, Marshal of France in 1775 – Letter signed “Marshal, Duke of MOUCHY,” in PARIS on January 12, 1782. 1½ pages, folio size – regarding the CROSS OF SAINT LOUIS requested by the Chevalier de GIMEL: “I am well aware, Sir, that the Chevalier de Gimel does not have the time required by the ordinance for the Cross of Saint Louis, but the same ordinance makes an exception for acts of war. It appears from the certificate issued by the General of the Spanish Army in Pensacola that Chevalier de Gimel contributed greatly to the capture; perhaps it would be advantageous to demonstrate, through this distinguished award to the officer, that without the French, the Spanish might not have achieved this conquest; I take a personal interest in Mr. DE GIMEL and have contributed to the promotion of the lieutenant colonel of the Metz Regiment. He has served with great distinction, is riddled with wounds, and has never left the ranks; the de Gimel family are people of good standing, and I have several grandmothers bearing their name, which increases my interest in the matter. I hope you will have no objection to granting this favor. I have written to Mr. de GRIBAUVAL to ensure that everything is done in accordance with the rules you so rightly value…”
