NASA. Apollo "Little Joe" Rocket. At the White Sands Missile - Lot 5
NASA. Apollo "Little Joe" Rocket. At the White Sands Missile Range test site in New Mexico, the Little Joe II rocket was used as part of the Apollo program to validate the Launch Escape System (LES). In the event of a malfunction or explosion of the launch vehicle during liftoff, this system was designed to instantly separate the Apollo capsule and its crew from the rocket and propel them to a safe distance, thereby ensuring their chances of survival. The Little Joe II tests, conducted prior to manned flights, were a crucial step in qualifying the safety system for future lunar missions. Rare. May 16, 1964. Vintage silver-gelatin print. NASA logo and typewritten caption on the back. 25.2 × 20.6 cm with margins.
