SECOND EMPIRE JOKE – “A Tale by Emile: A Night at Ernest Villain’s on February 23, 1866,” “Beijing, Printed in French type from the authentic manuscript by GU-TIN-BER,” 1866, Literary jest printed in an edition of 15 copies, personalized (name inscribed in gold on the front cover), proof of the print run at the end listing all 15 dedicatees, ii and 70 pp. (12.5 x 19 cm, foxing), illustrated title page with a frontispiece featuring the original photograph of the author dressed as a Mandarin, preface in the form of a letter from “Lich-Tong-Pif, Chinese ambassador to his master Gob-Tou-Skong-Veu, Emperor of the Middle Kingdom,” (note at the end of the text: “Lich-Tong-Pif, First-Class Mandarin sent by the Emperor of the Celestial Empire to study French customs in 2866”), bound in full olive Bradel, plain spine with decorative gilding, gilt edges (shows signs of use), numerous small humorous vignettes throughout the text—This is a tale interwoven with skits and verses; at the end, the author appears on stage himself: the enthusiastic audience calls for the author, and the stage manager replies, “The play we had the honor of performing before you is by Émile Bourdelin” (he is listed on the BNF website as an illustrator) — The book was printed in Paris by Vallée on Rue Breda
