CORSAIR. CANADA. Two interesting letters signed by the young - Lot 76
CORSAIR. CANADA. Two interesting letters signed by the young Lieutenant DE PONTIS, addressed to his friend Mr. BAGUET, a merchant from St. Jean in Marseille: Letter A.S. aboard the King’s ship LE PROFFOND, which departed from Rochefort on June 22, 1742: “…In return for the care you have taken to please me, I offer you whatever is within my power in CANADA, or at least on ISLE ROYALE, where I am going to undertake a short six-month campaign; it seems I will spend a refreshing summer there… I set sail in the best of health, which has held up despite the strains of a detail that is all the more burdensome for me since I knew nothing about it when I began—a detail that, however, rests solely on my shoulders, as I am the ship’s acting lieutenant. But I found helpful comrades who assisted me...” 3 pages in-4° + Letter A.S. written in the Brest Harbor, aboard the Apollon, on February 31, 1744, regarding the outfitting of a privateer: “… My friends are proposing that I be given command of a thirty-gun frigate of the King’s fleet for privateering. The King will provide the frigate with its guns and rigging; the remainder of the outfitting will be at my expense or that of my shipowners, who will share the profits among themselves after paying the King’s dues, as has been the practice in recent wars.” 3 pages in-4° + Attachment: Receipt signed by CAME DE ST AIGNE, Second Lieutenant of a Company of the Troops formerly stationed on Île Royale (New France, America). Dated at ROCHEFORT on May 1, 1748
