Jean Chaleyé (1878–1960) - Lot 1
Jean Chaleyé (1878–1960) Still Life Oil on panel, signed lower left 85 x 117 cm Reverse side Women at the Baths, signed lower right Jean Chaleyé, known as Joannès Chaleyé, was a French painter, graphic artist, and lace specialist, born on April 22, 1878, in Saint-Étienne and died on February 24, 1960, in Le Puy-en-Velay. During the first half of the 20th century, he played a leading artistic and educational role in preserving and revitalizing the French tradition of hand-made lace, particularly in Le Puy-en-Velay. His training began at the Regional School of Industrial Arts in Saint-Étienne (now the Higher School of Art and Design). Thanks to a scholarship awarded by his hometown, he continued his studies for three additional years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he enrolled in 1896 in the class known as “de fleurs.” He graduated as the top student, awarded a gold medal and a scholarship from the city of Lyon, which opened the doors to Paris for him. In 1899, he enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in the class of Louvrier de Lajolais—his director from 1877 to 1908—who was dedicated to the renewal of the applied arts in industry. The following year, in 1900, he was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, to Fernand Cormon’s studio, where he refined his artistic training. Alongside his commitment to lace, Chaleyé pursued a career as a painter. He exhibited his paintings at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1902; at the Salon des Indépendants, one of his works was selected by the Paris City Fine Arts Commission. Several museums acquired his paintings—in Le Puy, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, and St. Gallen, Switzerland—and seven of them are still on display at the Crozatier Museum in Le Puy-en-Velay. A renowned painter of flowers, he enjoyed his greatest success in the Lyon and Saint-Étienne regions, where he exhibited primarily.
