ESCLAVAGE - BOUËT-WILLAUMEZ (Édouard) - Black trade and comm - Lot 260
ESCLAVAGE - BOUËT-WILLAUMEZ (Édouard) - Black trade and commerce on the west coast of Africa. January 1, 1848. Paris: imprimerie Nationale, 1848. - In-8, paperback, VII, 230 pp. 2 maps, printed cover (faded, spine cracks with qq very slight lacks, rare foxing). Uncut. First edition of this work by Captain Édouard Bouët-Willaumez (1808-1871), the fruit of 10 years of campaigns and sojourns in West Africa. The author presents it as a sequel to his first African publication, published in 1845 under the title Description nautique des côtes de l'Afrique occidentale. The work is divided into 2 parts, the first dealing with the growing trade in West Africa at the time, and the second with the slave trade and the difficulties of enforcing its prohibition. The edition is illustrated with 2 fold-out maps of Senegal and Gambia, as well as of the West African coast, drawn by the author.
