Sylvain BONNET (Romorantin 1645 - Paris 1705) The young king Louis XIV giving audience to ambassadors Pen and brown ink, brown wash 34.5 x 26 cm Our study is preparatory to the drawing Ad Regem oratores, ardor remissus (he gives audience to the ambassadors), by Sylvain Bonnet, on page 88 of the Sol Gallicus collection. This large in-folio work, comprising 112 drawings in bistre ink, is an allegorical history of Louis XIV, to whom it is dedicated. Begun in 1680, the work is preserved at the Château de Versailles (inv. Vms 96 - Pl58). Venevault calligraphed the captions in 1720.
