An ancient "bird's beak" war club with a short, stocky head. - Lot 88
An ancient "bird's beak" war club with a short, stocky head. The most commonly used name seems to be go porowa ra maru, the Paici language name for the center of the Big Island. It's mainly a representation of the cagou (Rhynochetos jubatus), an endemic bird, now emblematic of New Caledonia, which shares a crest of feathers on the back of its head during mating rituals, reminiscent of the back of this bird's head-or-beak club. Kanak, New Caledonia, Melanesia. Wood with a light patina of age and use. Three screw holes in the right side of the head below the helmet line. 19th century Wear, chips and cracks. Length : 68 cm
