Dear Monsieur and friend... Soliman Ben Arras, your new Farmer, has just left my home, I have passed on to him your letter which I have translated for him... He hopes that next year you will give him a flock of sheep. Most of his land is subject to flooding and therefore remains uncultivated. I spoke to him about growing corn after the flood season, and he seems willing to work.... There have already been disputes with the Chiry den Ouled Chebel, and I was obliged to write to the Kaïd. The Chiry asked him what interest he took in the property of a Christian, what mattered to him whether it was devastated, burnt or not! This man feels his false position and asks to be given a rifle, I promised him that with the authorization of the Arab office...
