"Arrêt de la Cour de Parlement, qui condamne Véronique BARBIER, fille Chiffonnière, au Carcan, au Fouet, à la Marque, à être détenue dans la Maison de Force de l'Hôpital Général de la Salpêtrière pendant trois ans, pour avoir volé des Légumes sur le territoire de Belleville," June 16, 1767. She is condemned to be tied to the Carcan in the main square of the Village of Belleville, and to remain there for two hours, having signs in front and behind bearing these words "Voleuse de légumes en campagne", this fact, beaten and fustigated naked with rods by the Executor of High Justice, withered with a hot iron in the shape of the letter V on the right shoulder, and taken to the Maison de force...".
