How many events have followed one another since I left you, My Dear ROCHAMBEAU! ... if our beautiful France needed your arm, your talents, you would soon convince her that there is still a ROCHAMBEAU; and I am sure that it was only after having given this promise to the King, whose spoiled child you would be, that you were allowed to go back to planting your cabbages.... If you had kept some relations with the 1st Regiment of Dragoons, many of whose officers were filled by you, you would have learned of the numerous mutations that have taken place since the events of July..."
