RANGER 8 (launched February 17, 1965) - Lot 54
RANGER 8 (launched February 17, 1965)
Llot of 5 photographic prints:
- Ranger 8 under the eye of a technician. NASA photo captioned and numbered 65-H-97.
- 4 photos of the lunar surface at different altitudes, before the probe's planned crash into the Sea of Tranquility on February 20, 1965 (captioned photos). 7137 photos of the moon were taken.
The Ranger program was designed to take precise snapshots of the moon and gather information on the composition of the lunar surface. 9 Ranger probes were launched from an Atlas-Agena B rocket between August 23, 1961 and March 24, 1965. They were produced by JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California). After several failures from Ranger 1 to Ranger 6, the program was a success from Ranger 7 onwards.
