VOLTAIRE(1694-1778) is the author of the "Précis du Cantique des Cantiques", a verse interpretation of this biblical text, in the Libertine version, which appeared in Brussels in1759 from the bookseller Bassonpierre, It caused a scandal and was immediately censored and banned - the text circulated, as was customary at the time, as a "nouvelle à la main", i.e. copied and distributed "sous le manteau" - this is the complete manuscript of Voltaire's text, copied by hand at the time from the original edition: 6 folio pages (19.5 x 32.5 cm), the copyist has rigorously respected the page layout, with the various observations and remarks opposite.
