[BALZAC] Caroline MARBOUTY (née Pétiniaud de Lacoste, 1803-1 - Lot 428
[BALZAC] Caroline MARBOUTY (née Pétiniaud de Lacoste, 1803-1890), a woman of letters and apostle of feminism, married to an old chief clerk of the Limoges court, she became emancipated and began to write in an attempt to imitate George Sand, whom she knew, since she had been the mistress ofJules Sandeau (after having been that ofDocteur Dupuytren), she was nicknamed the "Muse of Limoges", and managed to seduceHonoré de Balzac, who did her the honor of accompanying her on a trip to Italy (but disguised as his secretary!).), but Balzac amused himself at her expense by making her the heroine of his novel "La Muse du Département" (part of the "Comédie Humaine") in the character ofDinah Piédefer, where he openly mocked her. Vexed, she took on a new pseudonym, Claire BRUNNE, and exacted her revenge in a roman à clef, "La fausse Position" ("The False Position"), in which Balzac is portrayed as Ulrics under unsympathetic traits - She continued a chaotic literary career and had a difficult old age, ending up dramatically run over by an omnibus) / Autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-8, Paris, April 13, 1850, [to her publisher Hippolyte SOUVERAIN, who was also Balzac's publisher): "Pour ne pas abimer mon manuscrit, je vous envoie, Monsieur, un brouillon corrigé pour l'essai que vous comptez faire. These 31 pages make 27 of the manuscript you saw with me, this difference resulting from the corrections made. I enclose a delivery of a "False Position". I've made sure that I still have at least 160 of them left - I'd reserved them to distribute at the same time as this new novel. Wednesday evening or Tuesday, your choice, I'll be counting on you".
