CHAMPAGNE - Curiosity / A rare Champagne siphon, this late 1 - Lot 656
CHAMPAGNE - Curiosity / A rare Champagne siphon, this late 19th-century instrument was designed to serve flutes one after the other, without fanning the champagne: to do this, the corkscrew end (worm on one side and fruitwood handle on the other) pierces the cork, the whole penetrates the bottle, and when the tap is opened, the champagne is poured by suction through the spout (here embellished with a grotesque figure) - this sophisticated method was highly prized in America when champagne imports reached the upper classes, pewter-type alloy (length 33.5 cm)
