Boxing / Joe Gans / Stanley Ketchel / Déro / USA / Poland - Lot 12
Boxing / Joe Gans / Stanley Ketchel / Déro / USA / Poland Robert Décremps, alias DÉRO (1920-2000) Two caricatures: Joe Gans and Stanley Ketchel India ink on paper, signed, captioned 50 x 39 cm Original illustrations for Pierre Cangioni's "La Fabuleuse Histoire de la Boxe" (1977). Nat Fleischer, the pope of boxing, considered Joe Gans (1874-1910) to be the best lightweight of all time; he also impressed Hemingway. Déro plays up his phenomenal power, as if he had four rights. The first African-American world champion in 1902, he held the title until 1908, having defended it 15 times. He won 157 of his 197 fights, winning 100 of them by knockout. Stanley Ketchel (1886-1910), middleweight world champion from 1907 to 1908, then from 1908 to 1910, took the world belt from Thomas in 1907 and lost it to Papke in 1908. Moving up to heavyweight, he also matched Jack Johnson and inspired Hemingway.
