50 x 39 cm
Original illustrations for "La Fabuleuse histoire du Rugby" by Henri Garcia, published by Odil in 1973.
Against the portrait of Jules Cadenat (1885-1996) in the book, Déro portrays the player turned tribune, like "Julius Caesar". A finalist in 1911 and 1913, when he played for Scuf, Jules was a fierce "footballe" player, before playing a major role in the selection committee and then at Béziers. In the '30s, it was Jules who promoted Languedoc wine by distributing barrels for the French national team. A trophy was named after him in the 60s.
Roger Lerou (1890-1979), a fine player with Bordeaux, then Racing, as the RCF's papa poule. Déro is very indulgent here, focusing on the bushy eyebrows of the great leader and coach, forgetting the role of "godasses" in the early part of his career.
