René Auguste de CHATEAUBRIAND (1718 - 1786) Comte de COMBOUR - Lot 131
René Auguste de CHATEAUBRIAND (1718 - 1786) Comte de COMBOURG, Ship's Captain and Shipowner, Father of the Writer. Autograph letter signed "De CHATEAUBRIAND", written from SAINT-MALO (Ille-et-Vilaine), May 11, 1765, addressed to Mr. de BAZINAN, at the home of Mr. le Comte de MONTAZET, Hôtel de Belle Chasse (Bellechasse), Paris. 2 pages in-4°: "I am very grateful, Monsieur, that you remembered my affair with Mr le Duc de DURAS, when you took the trouble to see this Lord... He replied that he was willing to make arrangements with me to put an end to all discussion, and I am accordingly thinking of providing him with a Mémoire... I am gathering materials to draw up an articulated list of all the objects in deficit, without prejudice to greater discoveries when I am in a position to exercise the rights of the Land, and I have already articulated 15 oppositions... 14 to 15 lawsuits pending at the Council of the Parliament of Brittany, idem in Bordeaux, and at the Presidial of Rennes and the jurisdiction of Combourg, two Fiefs mislaid or lost. A good part of the others... about a hundred Titles missing from the archives... Unable to remain any longer in arrears, I have decided to take it to court... I have not lost sight, Sir, of the acquisition of five Breton cows of the beautiful species that you recommended to me on your departure... the cows were to be purchased next Monday, the 13th of this month, at a fair in Basse-Bretagne... they will remain until I find a ship to send them to Bordeaux; Here you are sir, or in your Commission... CHATEAUBRIAND. " (Transcription attached)
