NASA. Exceptional lift-off of the space shuttle ATLANTIS (Mi - Lot 97
NASA. Exceptional lift-off of the space shuttle ATLANTIS (Mission STS-43) on August 2, 1991. As the orbiter roared off into space, a blue heron also took to the skies to salute the departure of the space expedition, scheduled to last 9 days in Earth orbit. This historic mission will see the first e-mail sent from space using a Macintosh laptop computer, released in the autumn of 1989. NASA had four ideas in mind: the agency wanted to test several controllers in space, including the computer's built-in trackball, a joystick used to control devices designed for space, and even an optical mouse. The Mac was also to be used to record each astronaut's health data and mission notes. It was also to track the shuttle's movements, but also to send an e-mail: the world's first from space! The astronauts who sent the e-mail were Shannon Lucid and James C. Adamson. The message was sent via the AppleLink network to Marcia Ivans at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, USA. The text of the message was: "Hello Earth! Greetings from the STS-43 Crew. This is the first AppleLink from space. Having a GREAT time, wish you were here,...send cryo and RCS! Hasta la vista, baby,...we'll be back!". In French: "Bonjour la Terre! Greetings from the crew of STS-43. Here's the first AppleLink from space. I'm having a great time, wish you were here... send cryo and RCS! Hasta la vista, baby... we'll be back!". Vintage chromogenic print on paper: "THIS PAPER MANUFACTURED BY KODAK". NASA logo and typed caption on back. 25.3 x 20.3 cm with margins.
