Christian Breviary in Arabic, 1777 - Lot 28
Christian Breviary in Arabic, 1777 Illuminated manuscript on European paper. 145 leaves. Key words in the upper margin of each leaf; single column of 22 lines of black naskh; rubrics in red; titles in larger ornamental script. Syria or Lebanon, March 14, 1777. 16.5 x 11 cm. Period leather and cardboard binding. Condition report: a few leaves missing at beginning, otherwise complete; partial watermark with large capital P in Roman script; occasional marginalia; scuffing; split at extremities, but solid in binding; foliation in modern pencil in correct right-to-left direction (and followed here); tears at edges of a few leaves; a few small stains and scuffs, otherwise good condition. This manuscript was most probably written by a non-native Arabic-speaking scribe, perhaps a European missionary preaching to the Arabic-speaking population. The text is that of the Breviary and contains the prayers and liturgical readings for the calendar year. It opens with the weekly prayers, beginning imperfectly with midnight prayers on Saturday, followed by midnight prayers on Sunday and the other days of the week. The Breviary proper then begins, with the liturgical readings on different dates according to the calendar from September onwards. Linked to this is the liturgical office of the Holy Weeks for the last ten Qanun. This last word translates as law, which could refer to the Ten Commandments. The volume concludes with prayers for the canonical hours and all the months of the year. Provenance: Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions, London, Western Manuscripts and Miniatures, July 2, 2019.
