The miraculous image of Notre-Dame de la Conception du Rocher Oil on zinc, inscribed Milagrosa Imagem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Rocha. 42 x 30.5 cm. Portugal, circa 1825. This painting commemorates the appearance of the Image of Our Lady of the Conception of the Rock at Carnaxide near Lisbon. A group of young children chasing a blackbird and a rabbit came to a cave where they discovered human remains. Three days later, on May 31, 1822, the image of Our Lady of Conception appeared on the spot. Today, Nossa Senhora da Conceicao da Rocha and its feast day are a popular place of worship for the faithful.
