The Pastoral Staff (Ցուպ Քահանայից), early 19th century - Lot 170
The Pastoral Staff (Ցուպ Քահանայից), early 19th century Partial copy of a work printed in Constantinople in 1792, the work of Poghos Kaghzvantsi. Manuscript on paper, in Armenian, notrgir cursive script, titles and passages underlined in red ink, 78 pages, antique binding. Armenia or Constantinople, early 19th century. This manuscript presents a partial copy of the ecclesiastical treatise Tsoup Kahanayits (The Pastors' Staff), published in Constantinople in 1792. This theological and pastoral work was intended for the instruction of Armenian clergy. It set out the correct way to hear confession, guide penitents, dispense penance and understand the seven sacraments of the Church. The text transmitted here groups together chapters on confession, penance and the duties of the priest, testifying to the book's practical use as an abridged spiritual manual for training or the daily exercise of the priestly ministry. The title, Bâton des prêtres , symbolically refers to the shepherd's crook - an instrument of guidance, teaching and mercy. Through its didactic content and manuscript distribution, this volume illustrates the vitality of Armenian religious culture in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, at a time when printed texts from Constantinople continued to be copied by hand for remote parishes.
