NASA. Planet MARS. 1st Mission: VIKING 1. Here, the first image (in black and white) of a human flag on extraterrestrial soil: the American flag on the planet MARS. It is mounted on the 1st nuclear energy supply system. In the distance, Man discovers the rock-covered Martian horizon. Context: in the summer of 1976, the whole world was stunned to discover a new American achievement in Space, with the successful landing of the VIKING 1 probe on Martian soil. The first images revealed a landscape sometimes reminiscent of some of Earth's desert relief. The feeling that human life would one day be possible on the Red Planet was affirmed. 40 years later, the planet MARS has become the number 1 objective of the human conquest of space. By the middle of the 21st century, we can assume that a human colony of several thousand men and women will already be present on MARS. The first photographs of MARS highlight every technical aspect of the VIKING mission, and beyond that witness the first pages of the greatest human revolution of all time: the colonization of a new planet by man.
