NASA. LARGE FORMAT. DEEP SPACE. A supernova remnant in the M - Lot 238
NASA. LARGE FORMAT. DEEP SPACE. A supernova remnant in the Milky Way, some 13,000 light-years from Earth. A long observation of Tycho by NASA's X-ray telescope has revealed a never-before-seen pattern of X-ray bands in a supernova remnant. The bands are visible in high-energy X-rays (blue), which also show the shock wave, a shell of extremely energetic electrons. Low-energy X-rays (red) show the expanding debris of the supernova explosion. The stripes, seen in the lower right of this composite image that includes optical data from the Digitized Sky Survey, may be the first direct evidence that a cosmic event can accelerate particles to energies a hundred times greater than those reached by the most powerful particle gas pedal on Earth. 2011.
