Weightlifting / Wrestling / Olympic Games / Paris / Sète / 1 - Lot 129
Weightlifting / Wrestling / Olympic Games / Paris / Sète / 1897 Poster for the café-cabaret: "L'Académie Athlétique et Gymnastique". For the "Séance du 30 janvier 1897, 23 rue des Boulets (Paris XI) - Seul établissement en son genre au monde possédant le matériel voulu par le Sport Athlétique Gymnastique". 25.5 x 18 cm (cut edges) One of the rarest and most astonishing posters in the history of sport, covering several key areas. It is not illustrated, but the text is fabulous, apart from the involvement of the best weightlifters and wrestlers of the time (Henry, champion of the XIth Arr., Mazin champion of Bordeaux, Eugène Mellet, Auguste des Halles, Célestin Moret, etc.). This is followed by an argument, which may seem rough, but is packed with information, aimed at Parisians and future spectators, to convince them to attend this brilliant evening, which will surpass all strength exercises seen to date... This exceptional original document, sometimes reproduced, originated in Noël Rouveyrolis's (1863-1932) athletic café-cabaret "Le Gaulois". Noël, who started out at the Paris wine market, opened this Rue des Boulets address in 1895, and went on to make it a renowned address for world-class muscle. Emile Deriaz took over from him. At the beginning of 1897, his southern faconde was attracting enthusiasts to the XIth arrondissement; he was no charlatan, however, having been crowned world weightlifting champion at the Brussels International Exhibition.
