STAGNI (Alessandro): Ragione ed esperienza. Riposta ad un opusculo francese che a per titolo "code de la société philosophique". London, 1814. In-8 contemporary half-basane, smooth ornate spine (headbands, corners and edges rubbed, occasional foxing, slightly later binding). First edition of this philosophical reflection on the relationship between reason and experience, a classic theme in epistemology. Stagni seeks to show that neither reason nor experience are sufficient in isolation. Reason is needed to organize, interpret and give coherence to the data of experience, while experience provides reason with its concrete content and its anchorage in reality. Knowledge is thus born of their dynamic interaction, and not of the domination of one over the other. The author also stresses the limits of abstract reason when detached from lived experience, as well as the inadequacies of pure empiricism incapable of producing universal concepts without rational work. A good copy of this rather rare book.
