(ALSACE) Letter A.S. from Major General BARRAL - PARIS July 6, 1871 - Dear Madam. In sending you this letter. I have little hope that it will reach you in COLMAR,...; I have not addressed it to Mr GAUCKLER because obviously he is no longer there, after the sad fate of our Poor ALSACE; and after the efforts so honorable for him that he has made to defend it, he would not be left in safety in COLMAR... Mr GAUCKLER sent me word in good time that my bag, which I had left behind on my expedition with him to STRASBOURG, was safe and should be returned to you..." he asks him to send it to him by rail "if, as is likely, (high-speed) service is resumed.... I had left with you a pair of epaulettes, which had been lent to me, belonging to a general who remained wounded at the STRASBOURG Hospital...". + 1 A.S. letter dated July 13.
