NASA. LARGE FORMAT. The STEREO spacecraft observed this visually stunning solar prominence flare on September 29, 2008. Prominences are clouds of relatively cold gas suspended above the sun and controlled by magnetic forces. The prominence rose and cascaded to the right for several hours, resembling an unfurling flag, before breaking up and heading out into space. The prominence is composed of ionized helium at around 60,000 degrees Kelvin. 2008. Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering in the margin on the front. Legend on back label. 25.4 X 20.4CM with margins.
