Two Mende mask-casks Height: 40.6 and 43.2 cm. - Lot 6
Two Mende mask-casks Height: 40.6 and 43.2 cm. Sierra-Leone or Liberia, mid-20th century. One features a lowered gaze, eyelashes visible underneath, a hairstyle composed of curved and vertical braids, topped by a notched crest and a tapered horn-shaped protrusion at the back. The other has a hairstyle of braids pulled up into four buns. The eye openings have been roughly chipped to enlarge them. A small aluminum crescent adorns the forehead. Long fragments of the costume's braided fibers are still attached to the lower edge. Both masks are in good condition, considering their age, origin and materials used. The first has a defective repair to the beak (in need of restoration). The second has a fine crack on the forehead, extending to the headdress, and slight scratches. Provenance: Heritage auction, November 9, 2023, lot #70295.
