Rare model of a dayak ship for the passage of souls (tiweh) Assemblage of wooden figures representing characters, birds, animals and a snake on the roof. The bow is adorned with a mythological dragon head (aso), with turquoise-blue glass inlays at eye level and a tail at the stern. In good condition, despite a few broken figurines. Composed of numerous moving parts. Kalimantan/Borneo, Indonesia, late 19th - early 20th century. In many Southeast Asian and Indonesian cultures practicing ancestor worship, effigies of soul vessels or spirits were created, supposed to accompany the souls of the deceased into the afterlife. Length: 152 cm (60 inches).
