Unno Bisei (1864-1919) Portraits of the Meiji Emperor and Empress Pair of repoussé silver portraits. Japan, circa 1890. 22.5 x 16.5 cm each (framed 39 x 33 cm). In their original stained oak frames, adorned with the imperial mon above each portrait, and bearing on the reverse the red seal of Unno Bisei and the inscription Meiji tenno son kei [Emperor Meiji's Respected Personage]. Both frames are preserved in their original wooden boxes (showing some signs of wear). Bisei was a talented silversmith, holding the title of Artist of the Imperial Household. He exhibited at the Paris World's Fair in 1890 and collaborated with London silversmiths. These portraits were presented as ceremonial gifts to foreign dignitaries or political figures.
