Suzani - Lot 25
Suzani Natural background embroidered with a large central star-shaped medallion, background adorned with small deep purple flowers. Natural background embroidered with a large central star-shaped medallion, background adorned with rows of small dark purple medallions edged with dark green serrated leaves. 228.5 x 355.5 cm (90 x 140 inches). Probably from the Pskent (Piskent) region of Uzbekistan, 19th century. Provenance: Christie's, October 6, 2008, Islamic Works of Art & Textiles, lot Textiles, lot 607. Tribal embroidered and decorative textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and other Central Asian countries. Suzanis were traditionally made by Central Asian brides as part of their dowry and given to the groom on the wedding day. Suzani comes from the Persian نزوس Suzan meaning needle. Suzanis, or needlepoint, are delicate works, which explains why very few examples have survived from before the early 19th century. Nevertheless, they are part of a very ancient tradition.
