Large Portuguese legal manuscript, circa 1704 420 pages on w - Lot 80
Large Portuguese legal manuscript, circa 1704 420 pages on watermarked laid paper, with index. About fifty blank pages. Folio (44 x 33 cm). The binding is worn, with leather chips on the edges, spine and corners. The strap is split and largely detached from the binding. The white binding cord is also frayed and broken. Concerns the morgado (majorat or fideicommis, a term of inheritance law) of Crestelo, managed in 1701 by Nicolau Vaz de Sequeira Freire e Campos, and also including the Morgado do Bairro, managed by his mother, D. Joana Helena de Sousa Chichorro. The documents concern properties near Viseu. They consist mainly of deeds relating to chapels, wills, masses to be celebrated in the chapels with copies of leases or deeds of sale of plots of land, the income from which was used to pay the priests who officiated. These documents are divided into some 70 different headed papers, each signed at the base by the lawyer Eusebio Gomez and other interested parties, including Bernardino Bonifacio Enriquez on most of the documents, as well as Comigo Tabalioff (?). The preface, signed by Eusebio Gomez, mentions D. Joanna (?) Elena de Souza.
