Mélanges manuscrits sur le marquis de Pombal, XVIIIe siècle - Lot 91
Mélanges manuscrits sur le marquis de Pombal, XVIIIe siècle Collection of manuscripts, on paper, in Spanish and Portuguese, circa 1780. In folio. (1), 86, (10 blank leaves). Nineteenth-century acid-stained sheepskin binding (pasta española). Leather title-piece inscribed in gilt Varios 19. Very good condition. Legible writing. With fold-out table. This volume includes: Nouvelles des prisonniers détenus au fort de La Junquera à Lisbonne, Observations très secrètes du marquis de Pombal sur l'emplacement de la statue équestre de Sa Majesté, Mémoire en justice de Francisco Josef Caldera Suarez Gallardo y Mendaña, plaintiff against the defendants of the enormissime prejudice, the very excellent lords marquis de Pombal and the marquise, his wife, Memoirs of the marquis de Pombal requesting his retirement and various justifications concerning his conduct and disinterestedness, Extrait des revenus et des biens patrimoniaux que le cardinal Pablo Carvalho de Mendoza et son frère, le secrétaire Francisco Xavier de Mendoza, recevaient annuellement au moment de son décès and Nouvelles relatives à l'introduction des tissus et tapis (bayetas) au Portugal, March 23, 1779. The manuscripts are in Spanish translated from Portuguese, with the exception of one, which is in Portuguese. With one exception, they concern the various activities of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (1699-1782), Marquis de Pombal (better known by this title), who ruled Portugal for over twenty years. He reorganized Portuguese administration, promoted the development of Macau and Brazil, expelled the Jesuits, restored order and rebuilt Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The document in Portuguese is Pombal's detailed plan for the erection in 1775 of an equestrian statue of the king to thank him for the reconstruction of Lisbon. The first document in the volume is the Marquis de Alorna's first-person account of his imprisonment in the infamous Junqueira redoubt. He describes the physical conditions, the other prisoners, the daily treatment and the despair of the situation of political prisoners. Some of the texts in this manuscript volume were printed in their original Portuguese at the end of the 19th century. Apparently, the Spanish-language versions circulated only in manuscript form and were never printed.
