Period binding in half chagrin. Luís Vaz de Camões is considered the greatest poet of the Portuguese language. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyric poetry and plays, but is best known for his epic Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads). The influence of this masterpiece is so profound that Portuguese is sometimes called the language of Camões. The day of his death, June 10, is Portugal's national holiday.
