** Book of Edifying Sermons (Գիրք եւ ճառ հոգեշահ) Constantinople, impr. of Sarkis Dpir known as Under the Protection of the Holy Mother of God, 1722. In-8° (16.3 x 10.5 cm). 488 pages. Ornate title page, running headpieces, numerous decorated headbands and initials. Illustrated with 16 engravings taken from the printing press of Voskan Yerevantsi in Amsterdam, representing the principal feasts of Christ (Adoration of the Magi, Baptism, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, etc.), as well as a portrait of Saint Sahak the Parthian. Period leather binding with clasps. The collection comprises 18 sermons (irregular numbering), attributed to major patristic authors such as Ephrem the Syrian, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Epiphanius of Cyprus and Sahak Partev. Many of these texts are printed here for the first time in Armenian, giving the work particular importance both for the history of theology and for Armenian bibliography. This edition is one of the major testimonies to Armenian printing in Constantinople at the beginning of the 18th century. Produced in the workshop of Sarkis Dpir, which was active for almost six decades, it illustrates direct continuity with the Amsterdam typographic tradition initiated by Oskan d'Erévan. Richly illustrated and carefully executed, this edition is extremely rare and appears never to have been offered for sale on the international market. A complete copy, partially restored in the 20th century, without altering its integrity. Presence, p. 171, of an 18th-century seal: Servant of Christ, Hovhannes Vardapet, testifying to an ecclesiastical provenance.
