End of the VARENNES Affair. "Law relating to the means of maintaining PUBLIC TRANQUILY. Given in PARIS on July 16, 1791. "Louis XVI King of the French orders, The National Assembly decrees: 1°) That an Address will be drafted, from this day forth, to the French people, to expose them to the principles which dictated the Decree rendered yesterday, and the motives which all friends of the Constitution have to unite around constitutional principles; and that this Address will be sent by extraordinary couriers. 2°) That the Department and Municipality of PARIS will be mandated to watch over public tranquility. 3° That the six Public Prosecutors of the City of Paris will be mandated, and that they are enjoined, under their responsibility, to immediately inform against all lawbreakers and disrupters of public peace...". (On the evening of the 16th, the Assembly passed a decree exonerating King Louis XVI from any involvement in the flight of June 20, 1791: legally, the Varennes affair was closed and the King was reinstated. The Assembly planned to prevent the popular movement of the following day. The riot ends with the Champ de Mars shoot-out on July 17, 1791). - Published by the Département de la Charente inférieure.
