Anne d’ESTE (1531–1607), Duchess of Guise and Nemours, Franco-Italian princess. Eldest daughter of Hercule II d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, and Princess Renée of France. After the assassination of her two sons by King Henry III, she actively supported the League—Letter signed by Anne d’ESTE, from Lyon in 1601. 1 page (26.5 x 19.5 cm): “Monseigneur Marge. I have been informed of the legal proceedings being brought against our subjects regarding the taxes due to us in Bugey (Sic Bingey), contrary to the resolution passed by the King’s Council and the peace treaty by which these are to be returned to us; you will learn more about this in two or three days. I therefore ask you not to harass them and to be patient for just a short while. I assure you that my son and I appreciate the favor you will do on this most just occasion. However, I pray to God to grant you, Monseigneur Marge, a long and happy life. In Lyon (Sic Lion) on this 16th of January 1601. Your dearest friend, Anne d’ESTE.”
