REVOLUTION. The National Assembly bans monastic vows on October 28, 1789 – Letter from A.S. BLANCHET, Priest, to his esteemed colleague, dated October 31, 1789 – 1p in-4°: “I have learned that you have been elected President of the National Assembly... Could it be possible that under your presidency all religious orders will be abolished? For to forbid them from accepting new members is indeed to destroy them... Could it be possible that in the foremost kingdom of Christendom... all its citizens are permitted to take up any occupation, even the most vile and degrading in the eyes of men; That they be permitted to become actors, yet forbidden to devote themselves to God; and all this by a decree of the National Assembly? Ha! Sir... a thousand civil and political reasons will rise up against such a suppression...”
